What's New? Cardinals Blow Late Lead, Game
SAN FRANCISCO - As time slipped away in the second half and the Cardinals clung to a four-point lead Monday night at Monster Park, they faced a critical question: Were they really different from past teams, which found ways to lose these types of games?
The answer? Not yet.
The 49ers, who had not done much offensively all night, went 86 yards in 12 plays in the final three minutes and scored when receiver Arnaz Battle took a handoff around left end for a touchdown with 26 seconds remaining. That gave San Francisco a 20-17 victory in the season opener.
Is it just me, or does it seem like every game for the past two years has played out exactly like this one?
Stop me if you've heard this one before - Cards 1st Rounder not in camp
Why should anyone be surprised that the Cardinals 2007 1st round pick did not report to camp as it began.
General manager Rod Graves said Thursday evening that while the structure of Brown’s contract is in place, negotiations over money have been slow.
“We will see what happens in the next 24 hours,” Graves said.
Brownie points to whomever can remember back far enough to the last Cards first round pick who reported to camp on time.
Training Camp Questions
With Training Camp Looming - here's a few rundowns of the latest media speculation about what sorts of questions the Cardinals have going into Camp.
Arizona Cardinals: Coaching and motivation are the issues, not talent. The Cardinals have the pieces to succeed and several of the developing players now have veteran experience. But how will Whisenhunt fare running the entire show? And can Russ Grimm finally get the offensive line to at least a serviceable level? With the additions of Levi Brown and Mike Gandy, and the subtraction of Leonard Davis (who was doing more harm than good), that shouldn't be too much to ask. The key to the defense is whether Karlos Dansby can finally emerge as a star in the middle of 3-4 alignments and on the outside in the 4-3.
How will the Cardinals transition to Ken Whisenhunt?
The Cardinals have plenty of pieces in place to be successful. But that doesn’t mean they can avoid growing pains under a new coach.Whisenhunt not only is bringing in a new playbook but a new philosophy, one based more upon controlling the clock and the game rather than the I-Want-To-Score-30-Points-A-Game-Quickly thought process Dennis Green owned (which ultimately failed). Defensively, Whisenhunt also wants to use elements of the 3-4 alignment, in direct opposition to Green’s undersized 4-3 setup. It would only be natural to have the Cards have some bumpy times, especially early in training camp and again early in the regular season.
The Cardinals new RB - Anquan Boldin?
From CBS Sportsline's Player Profile
As the Steelers offensive coordinator the past three years, new Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt developed a reputation for occasionally using gadget plays, so WR Anquan Boldin also could be called upon to throw once in awhile. What Boldin really wants to do, however, is to take a few of those 550 rushing attempts that Whisenhunt would like to have in a season. "I don't have to throw the ball, just put me in the backfield a couple of times and let me run it, I'll be OK," Boldin said following minicamp in the Arizona Republic. Would he be all right with running behind a fullback? "Who me? Running behind a fullback? I wouldn't mind, extra blocker, but just put me in the 'I' by myself and I'll be OK."
Either would be fine by me - Boldin is a beast all around - throwing, running and recieving. Get him into the game plan as much as possible and let the chips fall where they may.
Back in the Saddle
Well - it's been a long off season - one that we took some time away from football and away from the Cardinals to get refreshed and re-energized. Now July is here and we're about ready for some football.
Thus - you'll begin to see the slumbering beast that is AZPigskin slowly come back to life. Thanks for hanging around and visiting the site, and we look forward to a rebirth in the season ahead.
Cardinals are Footballs Biggest Loser
Painful commentary from ESPN Page 2 Columnist Mary Buckheit
In 1960, the team moved from Chicago to St. Louis and managed to squeak out a winning decade, going 67-63-8. But that would mark the end of their winning ways. The Cruds have been sinking successively deeper with each decade since -- posting a .479 winning percentage in the '70s, .408 in the '80s and .363 in the '90s.
Arizona Cards 2K haven't fared any better. They kicked off the new millennium with a sparkling 3-13 record, and from 2000-07 they've won only 35 of 112 games. Some things never change.
I guess the Cardinals are what we thought they were.
As much as I'd like to punch holes in that theory - it's pretty much dead on. Not exactly the best of times the last several decades for Cardinals fans.
QB Greatness tied to Superbowl. Warranted?
It seems that every year, around this time, we hear all about those quarterbacks who have won the Super Bowl, many of whom are immediately tied in to greatness. If they've won one, then they are almost immediately considered better than those that have not. It's one of those things that annoys the you-know-what out of me. Maybe it's because I'm a huge Dan Marino fan, and he never won one. That's what people who know me would say. But honestly, it's far from the truth.
Let's take a look at the quarterbacks that have won a Super Bowl in the past 25 years:
Peyton Manning
Ben Roethlisberger
Tom Brady (3)
Brad Johnson
Trent Dilfer
Kurt Warner
John Elway (2)
Brett Favre (2)
Troy Aikman (3)
Steve Young
Mark Rypien
Jeff Hostetler
Joe Montana (4)
Doug Williams
Phil Simms
Jim McMahon
Jim Plunkett (2)
Joe Theismann
Now, based on that list, how many would you consider "great"? Ya know, game changing, the "guy-you-want-as-your-QB-with-the-game-on-the-line" QB. I see Montana, Young, Favre, Elway, Brady, and Manning. That's a solid cast. So, out of the last 26 Super Bowls, 12 of them have been won by, what I would call, top-notch QBs (Aikman was not top-notch, sorry).
Now what is it that you always hear before and during the NFL season, every season? "Defense and a good running game win championships." Now, look at list of QBs with rings. Nearly every single one of them had an above average to great RB in his backfield. And most had, at the very least, a solid defense protecting the other side of the ball. Does Elway win 2 rings without Terrell Davis. It's not very likely. The reason I bring Elway up is that, before Davis arrived in Denver, Elway was considered at least one notch below Marino in terms of all-time QBs. In comes Davis, and before you know it, Elway is better than Marino. It's a prime example of all the credit going to the wrong guy (like Aikman with Emmitt Smith), and it happens on an annual basis. Like Manning winning the MVP of XLI (it SHOULD'VE been awarded to both Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes, who were THE keys to victory on Sunday).
Cardinals Hire Ken Whisenhunt
The Arizona Republic is reporting this morning that the Cardinals new Head Coach is none other than Ken Whisenhunt.
Whisenhunt agreed to a four-year contract with a team option for a fifth year. Financial terms were not released. Because Monday is Martin Luther King Day, Whisenhunt will be introduced at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
Whisenhunt, 44, has been the Steelers offensive coordinator the past three years, and is known as a bold play caller who also places heavy emphasis on a strong running game. His work with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger likely helped him get the Cardinals job.
It's now up on NFL.com & the Cardinals official Website

More quotes from the presser
“As the interview process went on, Ken continued to impress us and distinguish himself,” Cardinals Vice President of Football Operation Rod Graves said in the team’s press release. “It’s clear to us that he has the all the attributes we were seeking in terms of coaching ability, enthusiasm, organizational and leadership skills and the overall ability to lead this team to success immediately and for years to come.”
List cut down to just a few
Well, we now know the names of two of the potential Cardinals Head Coaches
Mike Sherman was back in town - and the "buzz" apparently made the trip with him.
There was a buzz surrounding Sherman’s visit Thursday that he could be immediately hired as the new Cards’ coach, including those who noted that Sherman’s wife was accompanying him on his trip.
And Ken Whisenhunt also had his follow up interview, which apparently went quite well.
More candidate tid bits from Darren Urban of the East Valley Tribune.
The organization, which gave Pendergast a courtesy interview for the head coaching job, remains high on him and would like to see Pendergast remain in place on the new staff.
Seven holdover assistants from Dennis Green’s staff — Pendergast, offensive coordinator Mike Kruczek, offensive line coach Steve Loney, receivers coach Mike Wilson, linebackers coach Frank Bush, safeties coach Rick Courtright and defensive line coach Larry Brooks — are still under contract.
The team is hoping the new coach will interview the assistants and consider some of them for the new staff.
The Pendergast factor may be one of the reasons Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is likely out of the running to be the Cards’ next coach.
Another is the probability the Cardinals want a head coach with an offensive background, one of the reasons six of the team’s eight candidates come from the offensive side of the ball.
One Chicago-based NFL source said the portion of Rivera’s interview about offense did not go well.
Although apparently there still could be another mystery candidate or two on the short list, Whisenhunt & Sherman appear to be the favorites.
And then there were Eight
So we've got exactly Eight candidates now for the Cardinals Head Coaching gig.
Here is the rundwon
Russ Grimm - Asst Head Coach/O-Line Coach - Pittsburgh
Official Bio
Seems a perenial contender for any number of gigs out there. Reminds me a lot of Marvin Lewis - name seemed to pop up for years before he finally got his shot.
Ken Whisenhunt
Official Bio
Would seem to be at odds with the Cardinals staff on hand given the Steelers Run First, Run Second and maybe pass on occasion style of offense. But again a name that has popped up many times over the years. Have to believe that either Grimm or Whisenhunt will get the Steelers job.
Norm Chow - Offensive Coordinator - Tennessee
Official Bio
Seemingly the favorite of both Adrian Wilson & Matt Leinart, has background as an assistant in both the college and pro ranks.
Cam Cameron - Offensive Coordinator - San Diego
Official Bio
Architect of how to use a top flight RB in all kinds of creative ways.
Ron Rivera - Defensive Coordinator - Chicago
Official Bio
Two straight years of unbreakable D coming out of Chicago.
Mike Sherman - Asst Head Coach/Offense - Houston
Official Bio
Was run out of his last job - but seems to be highly thought of around the league. May butt heads with Rod Graves, as Sherman was also the GM of the Packers at the same time.
Jim Caldwell - Asst Head Coach/QB Coach - Indianapolis
Official Bio
Have to wonder how much true input he's had on the success of Peyton Manning, or if it's just due to Peyton's raw talent.
And last but not least
Clancy Pendergast - Defensive Coordinator - Arizona
Official Bio
Most should be somewhat familiar with Clancy's work over the years. It seemed like he was an up and comer when he was hired, but three straight years of subpar results with seemingly talented defensive squads make this an unlikely promotion.
The AP is reporting that Grimm is the last to interview meaning that there will likely be call backs next week, with the list trimmed down to just a few.
Happy New Year Dennis
Dennis Green was fired today by the Cardinals
Green was dismissed one day after the Cardinals concluded a 5-11 season with a 27-20 loss at San Diego. He finished with a 16-32 record at Arizona. The Cardinals will pay $2.5 million to buy out the final year of his contract.
He was the seventh coach the Cardinals have had since the franchise moved to Arizona in 1988. Green's three teams in Arizona went 6-10, 5-11 and 5-11. He has a career NFL coaching record of 124-115.
"In the final analysis, when you look at the three years of wins and losses, we didn't win enough games," said Cardinals vice president and general counsel Michael Bidwill, son of owner Bill Bidwill.
Michael Bidwill announced at a news conference that Rod Graves, vice president for football operations, has been given a three-year extension to his contract that expired after this season.
So Green is out, and Graves is coming back. That's a move that shouldn't shock anyone with a pulse.
What a way to start off the new year.
The only thing the Cards did right this year, besides milking the state out of millions to build an amazing, world class football facility, was making Green play out the string rather than take the easy way out and fire him midway. The Bidwells made him keep showing up every week with that pile of garbage he's turned the promise of the 2006 season into.
Lets hope for better come 2007.

Joy in Mudville
There will be joy in Mudville this evening. The Cardinals are on a winning streak and Edgerrin James is nearing 1,000 yards. Who would have thought that was possible just a few weeks ago.
Edge has been the story
Check out his numbers in the last six contests
117 Attempts
493 Yards
4.21 Yards Per Carry
Not too shabby at all. Nice return for the investment of the NFL's highest paid RB.
Kudos to the coaching staff - the Cardinals are now 3-2 in their last five games and they've finally showed up with regularity for a full football game. Perhaps next season we can work on starting off with a full effort in Week 1 like every other one of the 31 teams in the NFL?
But enough being snippy, things are looking up from the cellar.

Pro Football Weekly Rumor: Cards to hire a new GM
Pro Football weekly is floating the rumor that the Cardinals will can Rod Graves and hire a new GM in the offseason, and let that individual determine who the next head coach will be.
The way we hear it, the Cardinals have finally begun taking steps to replace the current regime in its entirety and have started contacting specific candidates for the team’s top personnel job. Sources tell us that, despite his close relationship with owner Bill Bidwill, vice president of football opera*tions/pseudo-GM Rod Graves, who has been working without a contract since May, is almost certain to be given his walking papers, and that a whole new staff, headed by a new GM type, will be hired and then given the responsibility of hiring a new head coach to replace Dennis Green.
Marcel Shipp - All he does is score touchdowns
The East Valley Tribune has a nice piece about Marcel Shipp and his last four years as a Cards backup RB.
He won't be back, but we'll wish him the best wherever he ends up.
The touchdowns, amazingly, were Shipp’s first since Dec.?15, 2002.
That game was also in St. Louis, at a point when Shipp had won the No.?1 running back role from Thomas Jones.
Then, in the offseason and shortly after Shipp got his contract extension, the Cards signed Smith, who was handed the starting job.
Shipp outplayed Smith that season, but Smith was given the starting job again in 2004. In 2005, with Smith gone, the team drafted Arrington. Then the Cards signed James before this season.
Shipp absorbed all the blows, understanding his chance to start for the Cards had long since departed.
The three-touchdown day, given his free-agent status at the end of the season, was likely his final hurrah as a Cardinal.

Just like in previous weeks when I've done this rundown (Week 5) (Week 7), there isn't a whole lot of bright spots in there.
Some things however stick out more than others. Scott Player is having another fine season, yet the awful punt return team is negating that 100%, as the Cardinals are dead last in the NFL in gaining yards via punt. The Passing attack is finally creeping upward, while the running game has nowhere else to go but up. In five weeks, the Cards have gone from a +4 turnover differential to a dead zero differential, thanks to five Matt Leinart picks in that time.
Where are they now? Cardinals coaches of yesteryear
With Dave McGinnis' name popping up once again in the local media, I thought it was a good time to take a look back and see if we can't track down the latest locations of a motley crew of former Cardinals coaches. We'll start with Mack.
Dave McGinnis - The current Tennessee Titans linebackers coach has seen his name linked in the early rumor mill surrounding ASU' recent job opening. But apparently he has told "people" he won't fight for the job - if it's handed to him he'll take it, but he won't get in a drawn out interview process. Don't we all wish we had that kind of cajones when it came to job openings? "Yeah - if you offer it to me I'll take it, but I don't want to interview or anything."
Vince Tobin - Last worked as a coordinator when he served as the defensive coordinator for the Lions in 2001. Currently works as a Special Assistant for the Green Bay Packers
Buddy Ryan - Buddy has decided to let his sons carry on his coaching legacy, choosing instead to retire to his horse farm in Kentucky. He even finds time to shill for some horse products he finds useful. But don't worry - he's still in football. He's an active Fantasy Football owner of "Buddy's 46ers" in the Central Kentucky Football League.
Joe Bugel - Currently employed by the Washington Redskins as an Assistant Head Coach and de-facto Offensive Line Coach.
Hank Kuhlmann - Hank was a short timer, manning the helm for a mere five winless games. He made a boomerang trip back to the Cardinals staff in the early 2000-2001 for several seasons as the teams Special Teams coach. Wasn't retained when Tobin was fired and hasn't been heard from in the coaching world since. Kuhlmann was however, making the media rounds earlier in the season, when he appeared as a guest of a local Phoenix radio station's pregame Cardinals show.
Gene Stallings - Mr. Stallings spends his days now on the lecture circuit, giving motivational speeches and writing books about his son. He also did an interview last year with the Dallas Morning News about his days as a college football coach for Texas A&M and Alabama.
That takes us back 20 years into the pre-Phoenix days.
False Start...5 Yard Penalty

So much for my big talking. Apparently someone forgot to put cheese on the hampster wheel over at Qwest. But regardless, the site is now back online and we're all happy campers after a much needed win.
Two semi-favorable home games back to back could have the Cardinals looking at 5-6 wins if all falls correctly. Of course, being that it's the Cardinals things never fall correctly, but there is a tiny sliver of hope that Dennis could best his 6 win total of 2004. Very tiny sliver.
Coaching carousel spins round and round - but hasn't stopped in AZ
The rumors have been hot and rampant about whom the next football coach of the Arizona Cardinals will be.
Matt Leinart thinks he could see himself playing for a one Mr. Pete Carroll once again.
Those kind of comments always end up hitting the rumor pages at places like SI.com.
The Mike Martz parade seems to have quieted down for the time being. But that doesn't mean it's completely gone away.
Let's look at the tale of the tape between the centers of media speculation.
Mike Martz
The Good - Former Rams coach knows the Cardinals all too well after facing them twice a season the last several years. He certainly knows how to pilot a high flying attack.
The Bad - Was ran out of town in St. Louis just four years removed from a Super Bowl appearance. This despite a .697 winning percentage over six seasons. Offensive coach from the Midwest who was ran out of town not long after a Super Bowl appearance despite winning 6 out of 10 games during his term. Sound like anyone we know?
Pete Carroll
The Good - The architect of the top dynasty in college football. Looks like he'll have a shot at four straight national championship games next month. May have some unfinished business due to previous stints in the NFL. Ringing endorsement from the Franchise QB. West Coast Ties. Supposedly, his representatives and the Cardinals have already been talking.
The Bad - He's had two shots in the NFL, and both have ended badly. College football is not the NCAA. And yes, for every Bill Belichek 2nd time around success story you'll hear - there are four other Buddy Ryan & Steve Mariucci types out there, just waiting for another shot to run a team into the ground. Carroll is also going to require a ton of money to pry him loose from USC. And that's something the Cardinals just don't seem to do.
Not exactly awe inspiring is it?
Back and ready to roll
After a week away from home and away from the computer, lets hit the home stretch strong, with only five games left in the regular season.
Here is what we missed.
Who would have thunk it, the Cardinals offense exploded on Sunday for 402 total yards. Without Edgerrin James.
And yet the Cardinals still found a way to lose. At least someone has a sense of humor about it.
An Arizona football coach got fired. But not the one we were hoping for. More on this later.
At 2-9, the Cardinals are still in the drivers seat for the No. 1 overall pick. If only if weren't for that pesky win over the Lions.
Next up is the division rival from St. Louis.
Happy Turkey Day
Things have been quiet around here the last two weeks.
We've been using the time - both due to the recent days being holiday filled and personally busy, to recharge and prep for the final push to end the season.
Happy Turkey Day. We'll be back with a vengeance come shortly.

Was someone fired over the Pat Tillman sound system snafu?
This from The Sports Oasis.
Currently, there's an advertisement for a Video/Scoreboard Engineer position with the Arizona Cardinals. The responsibilities include: "the operation, installation, design and maintenance of all production systems throughout the University of Phoenix Stadium building including all control room equipment, RF transmission equipment, television, sound, communications, closed captioning and signal distribution systems. The Engineers must also be able to meet the requirements of the broadcasters that interface with video/audio systems."
Makes you wonder if the "technical reasons" were mostly human related.
Here is the position he is speaking of on the NFL Team Jobs Board
There is now note about when the job was posted - so it could be an incredible coincidence. But it's still interesting, no doubt.
And thus - the 6 game winning streak begins
How about that - a positive note amid a season filled with negativity.
And 8 game losing streak down the drain.
It was begining to look like the same old Cardinals were coming up to play near the end - but the defense held up, and Arizona comes away with the win.
But the loss came at a price - the defensive heart and soul is done for the season.
Berry will undergo surgery sometime in the next week or two. It is the second year in a row Berry’s season ended prematurely; he missed the final eight games of the 2005 season after tearing a pectoral muscle.
“This is a big loss for us,” coach Dennis Green said. “We will really miss him.”
One step forward and two steps back.

Not looking like the best of moves their Denny.
Can you tell tomorrow is going to be a doozy? I got nothing.
Meanwhile - the Mike Martz to coach the Cardinals rumors have been in full five alarm fire mode this week.
For starters, Martz could be the exact offensive-minded coach the Cardinals need to jolt their fan base and capture their players' attention. Martz would be able to get the maximum out of the plethora of offensive talent that the Cardinals have. In Martz's system, quarterback Matt Leinart, running back Edgerrin James, and wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin would be expected to thrive.
Count me for one that thinks this is a bad idea. Martz was notorious while in St. Louis for not protecting the quarterback, and considering how long it's taken Arizona to get a franchise QB - it might not be a bad idea to do everything in his power to keep him safe. And that means far from Martz.
Jerry Jones takes a peek
With a hat tip to Ben Maller, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was in town this past weekend and brought an entire crew with him to check out the details of Cardinals Stadium.]
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he brought 17 of his stadium officials to evaluate the Cardinals' new stadium.
The Cowboys' new stadium in Arlington is scheduled to open in 2009.
Power Poll Wrap up - Week 10 edition
Ahh....the warm sensation of being the worst across the board.
FoxSports.com: 32nd
Eight straight losses for the Cardinals. Time to start looking ahead to … oh, forget it. Arizona's terrible every year. There's no hope in the future, Cardinals fans. No hope at all.
CBSSportsline.com: 32nd
It's getting worse by the week. This team gives no indication of moving out of this spot the rest of the way.
ESPN.com: 32nd
We decided to try to find something positive for the Cardinals this week and this was the best we could do: Edgerrin James averaged over 4 yards per carry Sunday (15 carries for 68 yards) for the first time all season.
